USC Law School Honors Mike Colombo

 Mike Colombo accepts award from Chief Justice Toal, left, and Susan Gaddy, alumni association president. | NCBA Past-President Mike Colombo was honored last week by the University of South Carolina School of Law as a 2008 recipient of the Compleat Lawyer Award.
Colombo was one of three alumni who received the Gold Award, signifying attorneys who have been in practice between 15-29 years. Three Platinum Awards were also presented to distinguished alumni who have practiced at least 30 years.
The awards were presented at the annual Alumni Association Dinner at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center on Thursday evening, April 17. Dean Walter Pratt denoted the accomplishments of each recipient, followed by the presentation of medallions by Chief Justice Jean Toal of the S.C. Supreme Court and President Susan Gaddy of the Law School Association.
The awards were established in 1992 to recognize alumni for outstanding civic and professional accomplishments. Nominees are individuals who have made significant contributions to the legal profession and exemplify the highest standard of professional competence, ethics and integrity.
Colombo’s nomination was submitted by the NCBA with letters of support provided by Executive Director Allan Head and fellow Past-Presidents Gray Wilson and Clark Smith.
Upon graduation from the USC School of Law in January 1979, Colombo returned to his native North Carolina. He has practiced law in Greenville throughout his career, primarily with the firm now known as Colombo Kitchin Attorneys (Colombo, Kitchin, Dunn, Ball & Porter, LLP).
Colombo served from 2005-06 as the NCBA’s 111th president, highlighting a distinguished record of association leadership that includes the Board of Governors (1998-2001), the Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section (chair, 1996-97), the Finance Committee (chair, 2004-05) and the Health Benefit Trust Board of Trustees (2002-04).
His Compleat Lawyer nomination also cited exemplary community service in Greenville and Pitt County, where Colombo has served in leadership roles with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Pitt County (past president), the Pitt County Community College Board of Trustees (vice chair), the Pitt-Greenville Chamber of Commerce (past chair), the Pitt-Greenville Airport Authority (past chair), the Pitt County Chapter of the American Red Cross (past chair), the Greenville Noon Rotary Club (past president), the East Carolina Vocational Center Foundation and St. James United Methodist Church.
Colombo and his wife, Brenda, who accompanied him at the awards ceremony, have two children and two grandchildren.
