International Law Recognizes Harazin

The International Law & Practice Section of the North Carolina Bar Association has recognized William D. "Bill" Harazin of Raleigh as the 2009 recipient of the John J. Dortch International Service Award.

The award was presented in Charlotte on Thursday, April 9, in conjunction with the section’s annual meeting and CLE. Scott Hile who chairs the ILPS Section presented the award.

The Dortch Award was established  to recognize lawyers who (1) have served as a role model for international law attorneys, (2) have demonstrated the highest level of ethical standards, and (3) have shown professional competence.

Harazin has been a member of the section since its inception in 1992 and served as chair in 1998-99. Most recently, he has been instrumental in the creation of the NCBA Lawyer Exchange and served as the delegation leader of the inaugural exchange to Taiwan in 2006. He also was a delegation member for the 2008 exchange with Argentina.

In addition to his extensive record of service within the NCBA, Harazin has served as chairman of the board for the World Trade Center North Carolina and president of the N.C. World Trade Association. He is a member of the Advisory Board for the Center for International Understanding and a past vice chair and board member of the International Visitors Council/World Affairs Council.

He has served on the International Committee of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association, the International Committee of the N.C. Board of Science & Technology and North Carolina District Export Council. He is a former member of the 2006 Foreign Service Selection Board for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and a charter member of the board of directors of the N.C. Center for World Languages and Culture.

Within the NCBA, Harazin has served on the CLE Committee since 2005 and currently chairs the Distance Learning Subcommittee. He was a member of the CLE Business Law Curriculum Committee from 1992-2006 and served as its chair from 2005-06.

Originally from Chicago, Harazin is a graduate of the Southern Illinois University School of Law. He received his bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University.

Harazin is a  principal in the law firm of William D. Harazin, PLLC, and an adjunct associate professor in the School of Textiles at North Carolina State University.
