LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA (LANC) - MORGANTON OFFICE - LANC is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income individuals statewide. The Morganton Office provides free legal services to income-eligible individuals residing in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba and McDowell Counties. The Private Attorney Involvement/Pro Bono Project in these counties have two components: 1. Private attorneys sign up to do general intake on Wednesday mornings. The attorneys take general calls that have been screened for financial eligibility and counsel or refer the client for further legal assistance. 2. Private attorneys sign up to do 15 hours of pro bono work based on their specialities. Legal assistance is needed in all areas with emphasis on domestic issues, bankruptcy and consumer law. Also available is a contract system in which an attorney will take domestic or other case referrals at a reduced fee. MOUNTAIN AREA VOLUNTEER LAWYERS (MAVL) - MAVL is an organization of volunteer attorneys practicing in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania and Yancey counties. MAVL was formed in 1983 under the sponsorship of the North Carolina Bar Association in cooperation with Pisgah Legal Services. Participating attorneys are enrolled on a rotating referral panel and agree to accept up to two pro bono referrals per year. MAVL attorneys select the types of cases they will consider and review before deciding to accept the case. An advisory board made up primarily of private attorneys from its six county service area governs MAVL. Pisgah Legal Services administers the referral program, including training, consultation and litigation expenses. LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA (LANC) – DURHAM OFFICE - LANC is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income individuals in Caswell, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, and Vance counties. Every effort is made to tailor the procedures to suit the needs of the individual lawyer, whether in a large firm or in solo practice. Referrals are made in a manner that avoids undue disruption to the volunteer lawyer’s schedule. Volunteer attorneys are referred only the types of cases they agree to accept. In addition to providing daily intake services, opportunities to conduct general information and instruction in Pro Se Divorce and Custody/Visitation Clinic are offered. For those attorneys unavailable during the normal workday, evening intake services are staffed by volunteers. LANC also offers substantive law workshops for attorneys interested in learning about the areas of law that affect LANC clients. LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA (LANC) - GASTONIA OFFICE - LANC is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income individuals in Cleveland, Gaston, and Lincoln counties. This program is operated jointly by Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) and the Gaston County Bar Association and serves low-income individuals in Gaston county. Domestic Law is the priority of the program, with special emphasis on assisting victims of domestic violence and emergency custody situations. Special consideration and assistance is also offered to the elderly for wills, powers of attorney, living wills and guardianships. Other types of cases are considered on an individual basis.
