The NC Bar Center is a state-of-the-art facility located in Cary, North Carolina, just off I-40 at Exit 287, approximately 15 miles from the state capital, Raleigh. It is home to the NC Bar Association and other law-related organizations and is the perfect venue for field trips for students who want to learn about the law as a career, the legal system or a variety of other topics.
The LRE Department works with teachers to put together a custom-tailored program appropriate for each group.
The NCBAF Law-Related Education Advisory (LREA) Committee Sponsors Field Trips
The Law-Related Education Advisory Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association's Foundation hosted several school field trips at the N.C. Bar Center in Cary. Some of the events featured a PEP Rally (Peer-Evaluated Problem Solving Rally) in which students participated in short skits that teach the basic principles of mediation and alternative dispute resolution.

On Jan. 24, 2005, about 80 students from Lufkin Road Middle School in Apex visited the N.C. Bar Center. NCBA Assistant Executive Director Michelle Frazier and NCBA Director of Membership Whitney von Haam welcomed students and teachers. Lawyers in the Schools Committee member Diane Savage described her experiences as a solo practitioner in criminal justice law.
Peer Mediation Task Force member Julia Young, an attorney with Burns, Day & Presnell, P.A., in Raleigh, led Lufkin Road students in the PEP Rally. Jeff Daniels, assistant coach of the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team, participated in skits with students and signed water bottles reminding students how to “CHILL” – Conflict Handling by Identifying problems, Listening, and using Logic.

About 50 students from St. Mary Magdalene Middle School in Apex attended the Feb. 9, 2005, field trip at the N.C. Bar Center. Lawyers in the Schools Committee Chair Susan Giamportone welcomed students and teachers.
Young and Daniels interacted with St. Mary Magdalene students during the PEP Rally skits, and We the People District Coordinator Barbie Creech led an exercise for students on Supreme Court cases relating to the Bill of Rights. Following a lunch break, students listened to Shaw University athletes Ronnie Colbert, Joe Black and Waehdee Blidee speak about personal examples of conflict resolution. Students received “CHILL” water bottles signed by Daniels and the Shaw athletes.
The field trip concluded with Raleigh Charter High School students Sara Baker, Amanda Marsha and Matt Moore re-enacting a congressional hearing from the text “We the People: The Citizen and The Constitution.” The Raleigh Charter students placed second in the “We the People” competition held Jan. 28, 2005, at the N.C. Legislative Building in Raleigh.
