Justice Teaching Institute

CALLING ALL NORTH CAROLINA PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL

SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHERS!

The Law-Related Education Advisory Committee of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation invites you to apply to participate in the 2007

Justice Teaching Institute (“JTI”)

Sunday, October 14, 2007 – Tuesday, October 16, 2007

North Carolina Bar Center in Cary, North Carolina

What is JTI?

JTI is an opportunity for 20 public high school social studies teachers to gain a deeper understanding of justice and North Carolina’s judicial system and to learn new ways to effectively instruct students in these areas consistent with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.  Participants who complete all of the JTI requirements will be installed as JTI Fellows.

JTI will also offer to the 20 potential Fellows and other interested North Carolina public high school social studies teachers an “Open Session” on Monday, October 15, 2007 involving presentations by and discussions with various public officials.  This Open Session will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to all such teachers (sign up online at www.ncbar.org/lis).

Who are the JTI Instructors?
Judges, lawyers, policymakers, court personnel, and law professors.

Is this 2 ½ days of classroom lecture?

No!  In addition to instructors speaking on a variety of justice-related topics, JTI will: (1) facilitate group discussions and work on curriculum-related projects; (2) provide the opportunity to visit the North Carolina Court of Appeals and hear an oral argument before the North Carolina Supreme Court; and (3) teach potential Fellows mock oral argument skills to take back to the classroom.

What is the cost?

JTI participants (those registered for the 2 ½ day program) will be responsible for arranging travel to Cary.  JTI will provide a mileage reimbursement for those potential Fellows who must travel more than 50 miles to get to Cary.  All other program expenses (including hotel and meals) will be arranged and paid for by JTI.  Those social studies teachers registered only for the October 15th Open Session are responsible for all of their own expenses.

Do I have to do anything other than attend the program to be installed as a JTI Fellow?

Yes; to be considered a JTI Fellow, participants must complete readings and study guides in advance of the 2 ½ day Institute.  They must also complete a post-Institute curriculum project.

How do I apply to be a JTI Fellow?

Assuming that you meet the eligibility requirements, in order to apply, teachers must submit (1) a completed application, (2) a short essay, and (3) signature of their principal or department chair on the application.  JTI applications will be e-mailed to principals. social studies coordinators and departmental chairs in mid-March 2007, so be sure to check with them if you are interested!  Applications will also be available in mid-March on the JTI home page (URL listed below).  Applications must be returned postmarked on or before May 18, 2007.  Applicants will be notified of their selection status no later than the end of May 2007.

How do I register to attend the October 15th Open Session?

Those applying to be a JTI Fellow can also apply for the Open Session on their JTI applications, and need not take any additional steps to register.  Those who are interested in attending only the October 15th Open Session must register by September 10, 2007 at the JTI home page on the Lawyers in the Schools Committee website:

www.ncbar.org/lre

By mid-September 2007; JTI will confirm registration status and provide program information for those applying only for the Open Session.
