The North Carolina Lawyer Referral Service is a program of the North Carolina Bar Association Foundation, which provides the name of an attorney in a particular area of law based on geographic location to a member of the public. The North Carolina Lawyer Referral Service provides nearly 50,000 referrals annually to callers with various legal matters.
LRS does not provide referrals to pro bono attorneys.
HELP THE PUBLIC. HELP THE PROFESSION.
Each day, Lawyer Referral Service staff members respond to requests for the right attorney. It is a challenge to refer people to an attorney in 25% of North Carolina's counties where there are no LRS panel attorneys. In 2006, LRS provided nearly 50,000 referrals to people needing North Carolina attorneys. Some of those people were referred to an attorney in a nearby county.
During 2006, fewer than six percent of North Carolina Bar Association's eligible members (attorneys who are in private practice) joined the NC Lawyer Referral Service. The NC Lawyer Referral Service regularly engages in contact with the public to promote awareness of the value of engaging an attorney to address legal rights through the referral service.
When someone contacts the Lawyer Referral Service, LRS staff members interview callers to determine what area of law best fits the callers' situations. In counties where no LRS attorneys exist, LRS attempts to locate attorneys in nearby counties who in some instances may be one to two hours away from the callers' location or need.
Panel members are needed throughout the state in almost every county.
