Operation Legal Eagle

Citizen Solider Support Program

       FAMILY LAW SERVICES INITIATIVE

Members of the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Foundation, the North Carolina State Bar’s Legal Assistance to Military Personnel (LAMP), the North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) and United States Army Reserve Judge Advocates, and the Citizen-Soldier Support Program (CSSP) are collaborating to recruit Family Law attorneys to provide peer-to-peer support to the NCNG JAG attorneys.  More than 3,200 NCNG Soldiers from the 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team (HBCT) will be mobilized and attend Soldier Readiness Processing (SRP) at Fort Bragg, NC in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) from 1-12 December 2008.

The NCNG Soldiers have been preparing for this deployment for the past year with requirements to put their family affairs in order.  To ensure that no family issue prevents these Soldiers from deploying, the NCNG is requesting that Family Law attorneys in the private sector provide consultative assistance and support to their efforts during these 13 days.

The parameters for volunteering to provide this service include:

·        Consultations will likely include such issues as non-support, child custody, and child support; they will generally center around discrete questions or issues

·        Consultations will be peer-to-peer; private sector attorneys advising Judge Advocate attorneys

·        Consultations will be made by telephone or e-mail

·        Volunteers will be able to continue their regular work schedules as long as they are generally available throughout their scheduled time and can respond to inquiries sometime during that day or evening

·        Volunteers will be asked to serve for a half or full day; and a schedule will be compiled by the staff of CSSP and distributed in advance

·        An average of 300 Soldiers will be processed each day at the SRP.  Approximately 1% of these Soldiers are anticipated to have Family Law-related questions.

Your assistance with this effort will directly impact the lives of these Soldiers as they head off to Iraq and will provide them the peace of mind to focus on the difficult job ahead.
