ACLU OF NORTH CAROLINA COOPERATING ATTORNEYS PROGRAM - The ACLU-NC Legal Foundation seeks through litigation to advance understanding and acceptance of civil liberties principles by persuading courts to recognize new legal principles; convincing courts to apply established principles widely ignored in practice; and educating the public, through publicity generated by such litigation, to appreciate the civil liberties principles involved.  Our cases are handled by attorneys in private practice who donate their time pro bono to defend the Bill of Rights and corresponding provisions of the North Carolina Constitution.  Contact Shelagh Kenney, Staff Attorney, at aclukenney@nc.rr.com or at P.O. CAROLINA LEGAL ASSISTANCE, INC. (A Mental Disability Law Project) - This program offers legal representation to children and adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities regarding education and treatment services.  CLA conducts litigation and legislative advocacy and provides technical assistance to clients, legal aid attorneys, private attorneys, disability advocates and many others related to mental disability law.  We can occasionally use the expertise of volunteer attorneys willing to advise clients in matters related to estates, custody and employment discrimination.  Contact Christine Trottier, Interim Co-Director, at clamdlp@mindspring.com or at 1022 Washington Street, P.O. CENTER FOR DEATH PENALTY LITIGATION - The Center provides direct representation and consultation with attorneys representing indigent persons charged or convicted in capital cases. LEGAL AID OF NORTH CAROLINA, FARM WORKERS UNIT - This program provides free civil legal services to low-income farmers and migrant workers in the state. The program's greatest needs are for: (i) Spanish-speaking attorneys or attorneys with Spanish speaking support staff; and (ii) attorneys with experience in workers compensation law. LAND LOSS PREVENTION PROJECT - Created by the North Carolina Association of Black Lawyers, this Project assists low-income individuals, and particularly small farmers, who have legal problems with their land. It refers poor landowners to private attorneys who represent them on a pro bono basis. The types of cases accepted by the Project include: farm credit; foreclosures; partitions; actions to clear title and for trespass or ejectment; adverse possession; clearing title to inherited property; eminent domain; zoning; bankruptcy cases involving potential land loss; mineral rights and natural resources cases; land loss due to community or industrial development; wills and estate planning; contract scams and title searches. HOSPICE PRO BONO PROJECT - This is a project of the NCBA’S Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section. Attorneys volunteer to draft simple wills, living wills, durable powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney and similar documents for Hospice patients who have been prescreened for financial eligibility. Due to the nature of the clients’ condition, acceptance of a Hospice patient’s case will require immediate attention and completion. N.C. CENTER FOR NONPROFITS - This organization provides opportunities for volunteer lawyers to provide up to one hour of pro bono legal services to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a budget of $750,000 or less. The Center's staff screens for appropriate pro bono requests and refers appropriate callers to a volunteer attorney. N.C. NORTH CAROLINA JUSTICE AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CENTER - This statewide nonprofit program provides civil legal services to low-income persons in matters that generally cannot be handled by federally funded legal services programs due to congressional restrictions. Among the types of cases handles by the NCJCDC are: class action lawsuits; legislative and administrative representation; major cases that have significance to poor people in North Carolina; cases involving undocumented aliens; and cases involving immigrants. NCJCDC also supports the work of legal services and pro bono attorneys through CLE training, consultation and advice on individual cases, writing amicus briefs, and publishing a regular review of major developments in poverty law. N.C. VOLUNTEER LAWYERS FOR THE ARTS - This program serves as a link between the art and legal communities, providing educational seminars for both artists and lawyers, as well as operating a lawyer referral service to help artists find qualified legal assistance. Volunteer lawyers are needed to provide legal assistance in several areas, including copyright protection, First Amendment issues, and basic contracts. N.C. COALITION AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT (NCCASA) is an inclusive statewide alliance working to end sexual violence through education, to end sexual violence through education, advocacy, and legislation.  The 70 rape crisis centers we work with provide crisis intervention, court advocacy, and hospital accompaniment. OFFICE OF GUARDIAN AD LITEM SERVICES - Children involved in the court process require special protection. The Guardian ad Litem Program, which exists in nearly every county of the state, gives the abused, neglected or dependent child a representative who is specially trained to speak up for the child.
