The Pro Bono Project does not provide referrals to private attorneys.
We primarily support local and statewide volunteer lawyers programs, local and statewide bar associations and non profit agencies efforts to develop resources to assist people needing pro bono legal assistance. Red Flag Review FAQs
Do I have to attend the CLE training in order to volunteer?
Yes. At this time, the NC Banking Commission requires training attendance. * They are looking at other means providing training. Remember that the November 19 session is available as a web cast.
Will I have to meet with clients?
No. Your participation with the Red Flag Review program is limited to reviewing files accessible online through a secure site from the NC Banking Commission.
How will I be assigned cases?
The NC Banking Commission’s staff will regularly post matters for review by its volunteers. You will also be periodically reminded that there are matters available for your review.
Will I have to travel outside my area?
No. The Red Flag Review matters will be handled in the privacy of your home or office. You will not meet with clients, homeowners, banks or their attorneys.
What about confidentiality?
The NC Banking Commission will ask you to sign a confidentiality agreement before handling any matters.
Do I have to handle two matters in exchange for the complimentary CLE tuition?
Yes. Your CLE tuition was complimentary based upon your agreeing to handle two Red Flag Review matters from the NC Banking Commission.
Who do I call if I have problems with my password to access Red Flag Review matters?
You should contact Will Corbett at wcorbett@nccob.gov or 919-733-0577 to let him know that you are having problems.
What do I do if I wish to discontinue participating with this project?
Please contact Michelle Cofield at mcofield@ncbar.org or 800-662-7407 to discuss this matter.
What if I want to handle a loan modification negotiation or an actual foreclosure?
Please contact Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Mortgage Foreclosure Project at johnniel@legalaidnc.org.
I’m not an attorney. Can I participate?
Yes. Non lawyers (e.g. mediators, paralegals and law students) may help with Red Flag Reviews. Loan modification negotiations and actual representation at foreclosures are open for NC licensed attorneys only.

Each year, the North Carolina Bar Association presents the following awards to honor attorneys who have provided significant legal assistance to low income people in North Carolina. To nominate someone for any of the awards in the following section please click here!
- William L. Thorp Pro Bono Attorney Award - Pro Bono Attorney Award established in 1984 to recognize lawyers who provide exceptional pro bono legal assistance to low-income citizens in North Carolina. In 2002, the award was renamed in the memory of Bill Thorp, a founder of Legal Services of North Carolina, Inc.
- Deborah Greenblatt Outstanding Legal Services Attorney Award Established in 1991, this award is awarded to an outstanding legal services attorney.
- Chief Justice Award - This award, established in 1989, recognizes an outstanding bar association that has made extraordinary contribution in support of pro bono legal services.
- Large Law Firm Award - Established in 1997, this award is given to one of the 25 largest law firms in North Carolina for their commitment to providing pro bono legal assistance.
- Smaller Law Firm Award - Established in 1999, this award is presented to a firm employing five to 15 attorneys.
- Law Student Group Project Award - Established in 2002, this award is presented to a law student group for an excellent pro bono project.
- Other Awards - YLD Younger Lawyer Pro Bono Award and Intellectual Property Section Pro Bono Award.
I. Beverly Lake Public Service Award
- Dr. I. Beverly Lake Public Service Award - The Dr. I Beverly Lake Public Service Award annually recognizes an outstanding lawyer in North Carolina who has performed exemplary public service in his or her community. The voluntary service of this attorney may have occurred with a non-profit organization or with a number of groups in the community as well as through elective or appointive office.
Champions of Justice Volunteer Recruitment Campaign

This signature volunteer recruitment campaign seeks to recruit more attorneys to provide pro bono civil legal assistance to those who are unable to afford an attorney. If you are already providing pro bono civil legal assistance, the campaign seeks to gain your recommitment. Pro bono files are screened and referred through the legal aid network. Statewide free legal service providers also need your help.

NC Center For Non Profits Pro Bono Program Members from the Administrative Law, Business Law, Labor and Employment Law, Tax Law Sections and Young Lawyers Division volunteer to provide one-hour legal assistance to smaller non profits in North Carolina.
Habitat for Humanity The General Practice, Small Firm and Solo Section developed the Habitat for Humanity formbook for use by attorneys handling closings for Habitat for Humanity homeowners.
