John McNeill Smith Jr. Award

The John McNeill Smith Jr. Constitutional Rights & Responsibilities Section Award is to honor a person who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the ideals embodied in the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of North Carolina by the following:

  1. promoted the awareness and understanding on the part of the profession, the public, and/or public officials of the rights embodied in the Constitution of the United States and/or the Constitution of North Carolina;
  2. encouraged respect for the American constitutional system and the rule of law; and
  3. helped forward the discussion and debate of constitutional issues by the public and/or the profession.

Nomination Process

  1. A nomination may be made by any member in good standing of the North Carolina Bar Association.
  2. The award selection shall be made by the Nominations Committee of the Executive Council of the Constitutional Rights & Responsibilities Section of the North Carolina Bar Association.
  3. The award will be presented at the Constitutional Rights & Responsibilities Section Annual Meeting.

Please note that the nominee must be a citizen residing in the State of North Carolina.

Single-spaced, typewritten answers are preferred, with a double space between paragraphs. Please note that the nominee will be asked to confirm information provided, and you may be contacted by a member of the Section about your nominee. The nomination, supporting information and all communications, will be kept confidential.
