Love Your Lawyer Spotlight: Katie King

With the return of November, the weather gets cooler, the leaves grow more colorful, and the spirit of love and gratitude reaches an all-time high. The month began with Love Your Lawyer Day, a holiday that shows appreciation for lawyers’ important work and dedication to the law, focusing on the many ways they make a positive impact in our communities. And, of course, rounding the corner comes Thanksgiving — a day when we surround ourselves with loved ones and give thanks for the many blessings in our lives.

To further celebrate this season, the NCBA took to social media to ask our members to share stories of appreciation for fellow members who have left a lasting impression on their lives. Stay tuned throughout this November series to read the special shoutouts we received.

Our first feature was written by Kathleen Putiri of KP Law Center for Katie King of Wake Family Law Group:

Katie King definitely deserves a special shoutout for the lasting impact she made on me many years ago when I first started practicing family law. Since then, she has become one of my closest friends and confidants, but it’s how she treated me when she barely knew me that speaks to the heart of her character.

Katie was barred in 2002 and has been practicing family law since the beginning of her career. She is one of the founding partners of Wake Family Law Group and is esteemed in many aspects.

I first met Katie in 2010 when she was the opposing attorney on a case. She was much more experienced than I was, and my clients were not great. She could have wiped the floor with me, but instead, she never treated me with anything less than respect and courtesy. In a job where your gut instinct is to be wary of the opposition, her professionalism made it easy to trust her.

Soon, I was seeking her guidance in other cases (where she wasn’t the opposition) as well as professional advice. Over time, she has taught me many principles that have helped shape me as a lawyer. For instance, she believes there is enough success available for all of us to be successful — that we aren’t all fighting for a piece of the pie, but that the pie is infinite. She also believes that how you treat your colleagues and what they think of your character is just as important as what your clients think of you. Some of these lessons might seem obvious to others, but they are small examples of the positive perspective she has instilled in me — one for which I am so grateful!

The NCBA is so proud of all our members’ hard work, service and impact — we celebrate you and your careers every day!
