Law Student Representative: Peter Kane

Peter Kane headshotPeter Kane is serving as a 2025-26 NCBA law student representative to ensure that NCCU Law students are plugged into NCBA happenings, building on his work as a 2024-25 rep. Peter knows that many of his peers, and himself, will practice together in the years ahead, and he believes it is important to understand the breadth of North Carolina’s legal landscape.

Prior to law school, Peter served in North Carolina state government for several years in roles related to legislative affairs and budgeting. His undergraduate degree is from NC State, and his master’s in public health is from UNC Chapel Hill.

Many reasons brought Peter to law school, but the simple answer is that he wanted to make a difference. Much of the first chapter of his career was focused on implementing the public policy decisions made by lawyers above him, and he felt that pursuing a law degree was the perfect new adventure.

Now that I am halfway through, I can say that I have really enjoyed the experience; it is, of course, demanding and time-consuming, but I count myself lucky to be having fun with it. My best advice to any new law student is to work hard, take care of your body, practice gratitude daily, and stay in touch with your family, friends and mentors who have gotten you to this point. Law school will test the limits of what you can accomplish, but dig deep, believe in yourself, and as Michael Jordan once said, ‘the ceiling is the roof.’

Choosing NCCU Law was easy for Peter, between the Evening Program making it possible for him to continue his state service and the institution’s long tradition of producing public interest-oriented attorneys that serve the state. In just about every courtroom across North Carolina, there is a Legal Eagle.

Due to some especially compelling tort law classes, Peter’s natural interests fall in personal injury, data privacy and consumer protection law. He enjoys the “doing good” aspect of personal injury, but with a public policy twist.

This past summer, Peter served as a judicial extern in the chambers of Justice Allison Riggs. It provided him with a great writing experience where he witnessed different doctrinal concepts intermingle, making him come to appreciate the nuance and challenge of appellate practice.

When Peter isn’t working his way up in the legal field, he loves a good YMCA workout class.

From the moment a student enters one of North Carolina’s seven law schools, the NCBA is there to provide services and experiences that will enhance and enrich the law school experience. Beyond the books and the bar exam, the value of networking is underscored through active membership in the NCBA Law Student Division — and it’s free.
