Bill grew up in Winston-Salem, attended Davidson College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received an MBA, and Wake Forest Law School. From 1961 to 1963, he served as an officer in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He and his wife, Myrtie, who died in 2023, have three children — two of whom are attorneys — and nine grandchildren.
