Insurance Law Section Diversity Scholarship

The Insurance Law Section of the North Carolina Bar Association is committed to furthering diversity and inclusion in the practice of insurance law and in our profession more generally. The Insurance Law Section aims to accomplish this goal by sponsoring a diversity scholarship for current North Carolina law students.

The scholarship aims to support law students who have demonstrated a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through their activities, background and life experiences, as well as members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in the legal profession, including first-generation college students and those from disadvantaged-socioeconomic backgrounds; and who are interested in the practice of insurance law and of law more generally in our State.
 
Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the NCBA Insurance Law Section Diversity Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Current full-time law student enrolled and in good standing at an ABA accredited or provisionally accredited law school in North Carolina;
  2. Applicant must explain their commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion as described above;
  3. Applicant must demonstrate commitment to practicing law in the State of North Carolina; and
  4. Applicant should have an interest in insurance law.

Scholarship Details

The scholarship award will be $500.

The Insurance Law Section intends this scholarship to be used toward educational expenses related to law school. To that end, the scholarship will be written jointly to the recipient and the law school they attend. It will be necessary for the recipient to work with their respective institution regarding applicable policies and to determine exactly how the scholarship funds may be applied.

Scholarship recipients will be publicly announced including a picture and biographical information.

Please upload responses to the following questions in essay format. The questions may be answered in a single essay or in multiple essays. However, the total word count for all essay responses combined should not exceed 1,000 words.

  1. Describe your career goals, including any commitment to practicing law or pursuing a legal profession in the State of North Carolina.
  2. Describe your commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, whether in your school, community or elsewhere.
  3. Describe why you believe you are a qualified candidate for the Insurance Law Section Diversity Scholarship, including any interest you have in insurance law-related matters.

Submit applications by Wed., May 15, 2024. Recipients will be notified June 2024.
