Welcome to the August 2024 edition of North Carolina Lawyer magazine, the flagship publication of the North Carolina Bar Association.

The 2024 NCBA Annual Meeting, held June 20-22 in Charlotte, will be prominent throughout this edition, beginning with the President’s Perspective, which includes the installation address of President Kim Stogner. The Annual Meeting and NCBA members share the spotlight in our featured coverage, beginning with the election of President-elect Rob Harrington at the Annual Meeting followed by coverage of David Robinson, Honorary Consul of Japan to North Carolina, and the historic visit of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to North Carolina in April. Next, the Annual Meeting got off to a rousing start with the ninth Legal Legends of Color Awards Celebration, and attorney Mary Craven Adams is “celebrating the art of film” as an aspiring screenwriter and filmmaker.

The campaign to endow the Open Door Fund of the North Carolina Bar Foundation was officially launched at the Annual Meeting and serves as a focal point of a series of articles devoted to Making the Case for Your Support, Donor Perspectives, and the $100,000 Presidents’ Challenge.

Columns include the first YLD Column from Collins Saint following his installation as chair of the NCBA Young Lawyers Division, the latest from Catherine Sanders Reach of the Center for Practice Management, and an encore presentation of “Writing That Works” from Professor Laura Graham of Wake Forest University School of Law.

Annual Meeting coverage resumes with the Awards Dinner and Presidential Installation, during which the Pro Bono Awards, Citizen Lawyer Awards, YLD Awards, Distinguished Paralegal Award, and H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award were presented. The Annual Meeting also included the introduction of newly installed members of the NCBA Board of Governors and the NCBF Board of Directors and announcement of the 2024 Legal Practice Hall of Fame inductees who will be honored at the fall meeting of the Senior Lawyers Division in September.

NCBA Sections recently presented three awards, beginning with the Government & Public Sector Section’s presentation of the Grainger Barrett Award to Linda Avery Miles, followed by the Tax Section’s presentation of the Lifetime Achievement and Service Award to Richard E. Thigpen Jr., and concluding with the Litigation Section’s presentation of the Advocate’s Award to Gray Wilson.
