Janet Ward Black and Gerard Davidson of Ward Black Law in Greensboro have been selected by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro as the recipients of this year’s Habitat Hero Award. Habitat Greensboro will honor the NCBA Past President and her husband on September 18 at the annual Blueprints and Bubbly celebration, which raises money to support increased access to affordable housing. Davidson became involved with Habitat Greensboro more than 30 years through his work with the Greensboro Bar Association and First Presbyterian Church. Ward Black Law, of which Janet Ward Black is the principal owner, has become a leading sponsor and participant in Habitat Greensboro’s Women Build initiative, with its Legal Ladies recognized as the top fundraising team for Women Build 2025.
Alex Dale of Ward and Smith in Wilmington has been appointed to the Board of Trustees for the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). His four-year term was confirmed by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors. Dale is an N.C. State Bar Board Certified Specialist in Appellate Practice and previously served on the NCBA Board of Governors. NCSSM is a nationally recognized public high school offering a STEM-focused curriculum to students across North Carolina.
Carma Henson of Henson Fuerst in Raleigh has been named chair of the Nursing Home Litigation Section of the American Association for Justice (AAJ). The AAJ is a “national organization that champions justice and fairness for injured individuals, safeguards victims’ rights, and works to strengthen the civil justice system.” Henson currently serves as president of the North Carolina Advocates for Justice and previously chaired the organization’s Nursing Home Litigation Section.
Lieutenant Governor Rachel Hunt has been appointed to the leadership board of the new State Strategies Committee on Aerospace at the National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA). The NLGA Aerospace Committee was created in April, and Hunt was appointed to the six-member leadership board in July. NLGA is the “nonpartisan, nonprofit, professional association for the lieutenant governors and officials second-in-line to governors in the 55 states and territories.”
Avery Locklear of Ward and Smith in Wilmington has been appointed treasurer of the UNC Pembroke Board of Visitors. Her appointment was confirmed following a full vote by the board on May 31. Locklear will serve a two-year term. She has been an active member of the Board of Visitors since November, during which time “she has played a hands-on role in helping the university strengthen connections with alumni, businesses, and policymakers while offering valuable input on key university initiatives.”
