McIntyre Receives Lake Public Service Award

Douglas Carmichael (“Mike”) McIntyre II was honored by the North Carolina Bar Association on Thursday, June 21, as the recipient of the 2018 Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake, Jr. Public Service Award.

The award was presented at the NCBA Annual Meeting Awards Dinner.

McIntyre has inspired citizens, students and his fellow attorneys through his professional, community, civic and personal activities and his exemplary public service. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years, Congressman McIntyre won the top National Legislative Awards on veterans, law enforcement, agriculture, economic development, coastal and senior citizens issues, rural healthcare, fitness and youth sports. The Secretary of the Navy presented him its highest civilian award, the Outstanding Public Service Award.

Over the last decade, McIntyre organized an annual Youth Leadership Summit to inspire outstanding high school students to community service, and in 2017 established the Douglas Carmichael McIntyre II Justice Fund of the North Carolina Bar Foundation Endowment in support of the McIntyre Youth Leadership Challenge.

Early in his career, McIntyre served on the executive committee of the Citizenship Education Committee of the ABA Young Lawyers Division, as chair of the NCBA Citizenship Education Committee, and served on the NCBA Lawyers Advisory Committee to the N.C. Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution.

McIntyre has been state president of the Christian Legal Society; president of Lumberton’s downtown revitalization corporation; an elder, deacon, teacher and daycare chair in his church; active in Rotary; co-chaired the Congressional Task Force on Responsible Fatherhood, was founding chair of the Congressional Caucus on Youth Sports and named an International Sports Ethics Fellow. He has received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service and the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and is a charter member of the North Carolina Pro Bono Honor Society.

McIntyre serves as senior advisor and director of government relations for Poyner Spruill in Raleigh. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UNC School of Law.
