NCBF + NCBA SOGI Name Change Clinics Held

The North Carolina Bar Foundation and the NCBA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee recently held two Name Change Clinics in the Piedmont Triad.

The first clinic, conducted in partnership with Wake Forest University School of Law, Pride Winston-Salem and Equality NC, was held on Saturday, April 13, at Wake Forest Law in Winston-Salem.

Seventeen clients were served by a volunteer workforce consisting of six attorney volunteers and 13 Wake Forest law students.

The second clinic, conducted in partnership with the Guilford Green Foundation, Elon Law, and Equality NC, was held on Saturday, April 20, at the Guilford Green Foundation and LGBTQ+ Center in Greensboro.

Name Change Clinics were established by the NCBA Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee, or SOGI, to support transgender North Carolinians in drafting the required documents and filings for seeking a legal name change to affirm their gender.

The clinics assist participants by explaining the name change process, completing forms through NC Courts Guide & File, and notarizing necessary name change forms.
