William F. Womble: 1916-2016

William “Bill” Fletcher Womble of Winston-Salem died Sept. 16 at the age of 99, one month shy of his 100th birthday. He served as president of the North Carolina Bar Association in 1966-67.

A retired partner of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice and its most senior member, Womble joined the firm in 1939 following his graduation from the Duke University School of Law. He also earned his undergraduate degree from Duke.

His record of service in the NCBA included chairmanship of the NCBA Founders Campaign through which the NCBA Foundation Endowment was established. It was also under Womble’s leadership as president that the NCBA integrated its membership.

He received the NCBA’s highest award, the Judge John J. Parker Award, in 1984.
