Welcome to the May 2022 edition of North Carolina Lawyer magazine, the flagship publication of the North Carolina Bar Association.

For the first time in three years, the North Carolina Bar Association is excited to resume in-person attendance at the NCBA Annual Meeting, scheduled June 23-24 in Winston-Salem. In his President’s Perspective, Jon Heyl reflects on previous Annual Meetings and provides a preview of this year’s event.

This edition also includes columns by Will Quick, chair of the Young Lawyers Division; Catherine Sanders Reach, director of the NCBA Center for Practice Management; and Professor Laura Graham of Wake Forest University School of Law (“Writing That Works”).

Feature coverage circles the globe, thanks to a planning session for the upcoming Africa Military Law Forum that included involvement of the NCBA and its Military & Veterans Law Section and an event at the N.C. Bar Center. Closer to home, Rufus Edmisten, who grew up on a farm and worked in a garden long before he entered the political arena, rediscovers his roots every Saturday morning as a host of “The Weekend Gardener.”

Our volunteers always have a story to tell about their 4ALL Statewide Service Day experiences, and this year was no exception, as evidenced by “NCBA Past Presidents Answer 4ALL Phones From Home On NC Lawyers’ ‘Best Day’” and “4ALL’s Common Theme: NC Legal Community Is Continuing To Step Up.”

Our Member Profile is devoted to Jennifer Giordano-Coltart, a patent law attorney who holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology. Debbie Harris, a past chair of the Paralegal Division, has taken on a new leadership role as president of the N.C. Association of County Clerks. Tacker LeCarpentier was recently installed as president of the National Structured Settlements Trade Association. And Judge Craig Whitley has been appointed to his third term as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Western District of North Carolina.

The NCBA Young Lawyers Division and three NCBA Sections presented awards right up to our deadline. We are pleased to include coverage devoted to Cheryl Howell of the UNC School of Government, who was recognized on Law Day by the YLD as this year’s recipient of the Liberty Bell Award, and recent honors bestowed by the Dispute Resolution Section, the Administrative Law Section, and the Construction Law Section.
