Attorney Membership | Price varies based on Year of Practice
Active and inactive members of the North Carolina State Bar or a resident of N.C. who is active or inactive with a state bar or other authority of another state, territory or the District of Columbia that regulates the practice of law in that jurisdiction. Attorneys who are inactive because of disbarment or disciplinary suspension are not permitted to be members of the Association. Annual attorney rates are determined by the attorney’s year of practice as of December 31st. New to the Practice of Law? Consider First Five℠ membership from NCBA. This exciting new membership has a low, one-time, cost of only $395 and amazingly extends through your 5th year of practice. Not only that, but First Five includes perks not offered with annual membership.
- 1st-2nd year of practice: $120 (Annual) or $395 (First Five membership)
- 3rd-5th year of practice: $198 (Annual) or $395 (First Five membership)
- 6th+ year of practice: $396 (Annual)
Judge Membership | $198
A judge of a U.S. federal, state or local court who resides in N.C. Must be an active judge to receive this membership type. Become a Judge Member.
Paralegal Membership | $99
- Paralegal (In-state): Paralegals who reside in N.C. and are employed by an attorney for at least three consecutive years or at least one year with completion of one of the following: NCCP status by the N.C. State Bar, certification from the NALA exam, a four-year B.A. or B.S. from an accredited school, a community college paralegal program or an ABA-accredited program for paralegals.
- Paralegal (Out-of-state): Paralegals who reside in the District of Columbia or a state or territory other than N.C. and are employed by an attorney for at least three consecutive years or at least one year with completion of one of the following: NCCP status by the N.C. State Bar, certification from the NALA exam, a four-year B.A. or B.S. from an accredited school, a community college paralegal program or an ABA-accredited program for paralegals.
- Paralegal Provisional (In-state): Paralegals who reside in N.C. and are currently unemployed or have been employed for less than one year.
- Paralegal Provisional (Out-of-state): Paralegals who reside in the District of Columbia or a state or territory other than N.C. and are currently unemployed or have been employed for less than one year.
Affiliate Membership | $99
A category for participation by non-lawyers in the Association or in any section, division or committee of the Association that permits non-lawyer affiliation. Non-lawyer means any person not licensed to practice law. Any person whose license is inactive for any reason other than disciplinary suspension shall be deemed licensed to practice law and not eligible for affiliate membership. The NCBA offers Affiliate Membership in the Association and the following sections and division: Law Student Affiliate; Administrative Law; Dispute Resolution; Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Law; Intellectual Property Law; International Practice; Juvenile Justice & Children’s Rights; Military & Veterans Law; Privacy & Data Security; Small Firm & Technology; Workers’ Compensation; Zoning, Planning & Land Use; and Paralegal Student of the Paralegal Division. Become an Affiliate Member.
Law Student Membership | $0
- Law Student: Students enrolled and in good standing in any regularly organized and accredited or provisionally accredited law school located in N.C.
- Law Student Affiliate: Student enrolled and in good standing in i) any out-of-state law school accredited, provisionally accredited or in the process of preparing for accreditation or ii) any unaccredited N.C. law school preparing for accreditation.
Retired Membership | $99
Members reaching the age of 60 and having elected Inactive Retired Status with the North Carolina State Bar pursuant to 27 NCAC chapter 1A.0201(c)(2)(B)). Become a Retired Member.
Emeritus Membership | $198
A regular or sustaining member who has been a member for a total of at least 40 years, who is 70 years of age or older and is no longer practicing law full-time. For more information, please contact Member Services at [email protected] or 919.677.0561.
Sustainer Membership | $792
A lawyer who meets the requirements of regular membership but voluntarily pays twice the regular dues to provide greater support to the Association’s programs and future goals. Sustainer Membership pricing is dependent upon membership type. International Membership | Price varies upon membership type
A lawyer classified by a bar or other authority of a foreign jurisdiction that regulates the practice of law in that jurisdiction, as active or inactive, regardless of where they reside, if sponsored by a regular member in good standing. Attorneys who are inactive because of disbarment or disciplinary suspension are not permitted to be members of the Association. International Membership pricing is dependent upon membership type. An international membership application must be completed with the International Lawyers Sponsor form, signed by a regular member of the NCBA.
