Welcome to the February 2022 edition of North Carolina Lawyer magazine, the flagship publication of the North Carolina Bar Association.
As the pandemic stretches into its third year, it is only fitting that the President’s Perspective is devoted to the 4ALL Statewide Service Day. After all, it was at this event two years ago that so many of our members gathered in person one last time before abruptly adjusting to the “new normal” brought about by COVID-19. And, as President Jon Heyl writes, our ability to continue the tradition of 4ALL in a virtual format speaks volumes as to how the North Carolina Bar Foundation is meeting the demands of these challenging times.
We are also pleased to include columns by Will Quick, chair of the Young Lawyers Division, who is assisted by Collins Saint, founding chair of the NCBA’s new Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee; Catherine Sanders Reach, director of the NCBA Center for Practice Management; and Professor Laura Graham of Wake Forest University School of Law (“Writing That Works”).
Writing is also the focal point of a feature devoted to our blog authors, “A Glimpse Into the Lives of Lawyer-Writers: Three NCBarBlog Contributors Share Their Thoughts on Writing.” Leah McLean and Shelby Gilmer offer their insights in “Law Students Shine Light on Mental Health, Well-Being,” while our member spotlight on Brandon McPherson features his insights on service, professionalism, work-life balance and much more. Service is also a recurring theme in additional coverage devoted to the Foundation in “Wills for Heroes Marks Milestone Year With Enhanced Technology and Support” and “Anonymous Donor Establishes Justice Fund Unlike Any Other.”
Adam Foodman, who graced the cover of North Carolina Lawyer in 2002 as chair of the Real Property Section, now leads Solar Operations Solutions, LLC, and remains a loyal member of the NCBA, as he discusses in “Adam Foodman May Have Left His Real Property Practice, But He’s Still Reaching New Heights In Renewable Energy.” Hear from members Shelby Benton and Mary Irvine in “NC IOLTA Strengthened By Strategic Plan, Longtime Involvement of NCBA Leadership,” and read about transitions taking place in “Bierman Completes Groundbreaking Tenure As Dean of Elon University School of Law” and “Hausen’s Retirement From LANC Marks End of an Era, Beginning of Next Chapter In Career Driven by Service.”
Rounding out this edition, it is exciting to see NCBA Sections continue their tradition of presenting awards, as denoted in coverage regarding recipients recently announced by the Criminal Justice Section and the Military and Veterans Law Section.
