More Volunteer Attorneys Needed!
URGENT: ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS NEEDED
TO ASSIST HURRICANE MATTHEW SURVIVORS
The North Carolina Bar Association, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division partnered to provide free legal services to low-income victims of Hurricane Matthew by establishing a disaster legal services hotline on October 10.
To date, over 130 attorneys have generously donated their time to help nearly 200 victims in the affected areas. However, as the recovery efforts continue, the needs of the victims only continue to rise and additional volunteer attorneys are needed to assist with our effort to provide free legal assistance to our fellow North Carolinians in need.
Although attorneys are especially needed to assist victims with:
- (1) landlord-tenant issues;
- (2) insurance claims; and
- (3) appeals of FEMA claims
All lawyers can help. Many cases, especially FEMA appeals, only require practical problem solving. Training and other resources are also available to assist volunteer attorneys.
Volunteer lawyers will answer most legal questions by telephone. Travel is not expected, unless the volunteer attorney would like to do so. If the situation requires additional representation, alternative referrals are available. Volunteer lawyers must agree not to accept fee-generating cases from the disaster victims they help.
